A Fire Damaged a Dairy Factory in Jagatpur

The fire began at about 7:40am in the plant’s cooling and freezing section, according to Abani Swain, Cuttack’s deputy range fire officer. Thick black smoke rose from the processing and warehouse areas, prompting an emergency response from firefighting teams serving the industrial zone.

Fire tenders from Chauliaganj and Salipur sent four units to the site. Their task included stopping the flames from spreading to nearby industrial compounds. Heavy smoke inside the warehouse created difficult conditions for crews and temporarily kept specialised robotics equipment operated by the Fire Services Department from entering the building.

Materials held in the godown included thermocol insulation panels, tin containers used for packaging and components from industrial air-conditioning compressors. Fire officials said these combustible items helped the flames move through the cold-storage infrastructure.

The cold-chain and packing floor was largely empty when the fire started, and no casualties were recorded. The blaze destroyed property valued at lakhs of rupees, including refrigeration machinery, cold-room insulation and packaging stocks. Firefighters later brought the affected perimeter under control.

Initial findings by fire-safety inspectors pointed to a possible electrical short circuit inside the cooling unit. Jagatpur police and the Odisha Fire Services Department have opened a joint investigation to establish the cause and examine whether the facility complied with required fire-safety measures and building regulations.
