An innovative collaboration in Tasmania aims to tackle malnutrition among palliative care patients with a unique high-protein ice cream.
A Sweet Solution for Palliative Care Patients
In a remarkable partnership showcasing the potential of the agribusiness sector, Tasmania's Van Diemens Land Creamery has teamed up with healthcare provider Calvary to develop a 'medicinal ice cream' aimed at aiding palliative care patients. This innovative product is designed to help combat unintended weight loss and loss of appetite commonly experienced by these patients. The 'medicinal ice cream,' which is not a standard retail item but a specialized medical food, is nutritionally fortified to meet clinical standards.

It is high in protein and fat, essential for patients with increased nutritional needs due to illness or age, and enriched with vitamins D3 and B12 to boost immune function and bone density. The manufacturing of a high-protein ice cream poses unique challenges, as the creamery had to ensure proper ingredient dissolution and compliance with FSANZ guidelines for adding vitamins. The project sources milk from a certified organic dairy farm of approximately 560 Jersey cows, known for their high-protein and high-fat milk, crucial for the product’s nutritional requirements. Although this endeavor is not driven by profit but rather passion and expertise, it highlights a compassionate and innovative aspect of dairy economics, demonstrating how the sector can evolve to meet new health challenges.
