Welsh Government Rejects Livestock Reduction to Meet Climate Targets

The Welsh Government has stated it does not plan to mandate a reduction in livestock numbers as part of its climate strategy. Llyr Gruffydd, the rural resilience minister, confirmed the position during discussions in the Senedd, emphasizing the agriculture sector's central role in Wales' rural economy.

The debate was sparked by Laura Anne Jones of Reform, who criticized the government's adherence to what she termed 'left-wing ideological climate targets' that she believes come at the expense of farmers. She questioned whether Wales would adopt independent recommendations to decrease meat and dairy consumption.

The UK Climate Change Committee has recommended a 25% reduction in meat consumption and a 27% decrease in cattle and sheep numbers by 2040 to meet net-zero goals by 2050. Llyr Gruffydd, however, reiterated the Welsh Government's commitment to a sustainable and productive livestock sector, stating, "We want to see Welsh farmers producing high-quality food in a way that’s both economically and environmentally sustainable."

Mr. Gruffydd highlighted the upcoming Sustainable Farming Scheme as the primary mechanism for enhancing farmers' resilience without compromising food production standards. His vision includes boosting local production, processing, and procurement.

Labour MS Vikki Howells reminded the Senedd of the previous Labour administration's efforts in nature conservation, citing the Nature Estate Cymru initiative and the recognition of 'Naturfa sites' under a Welsh Government program. She urged Mr. Gruffydd to continue these initiatives.

Mr. Gruffydd acknowledged the significance of the initiatives but admitted he was not fully informed about them, promising to provide a detailed assessment later. He stressed the importance of aligning the climate and nature action plan with these efforts.

On a related note, Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies discussed a report on governance at Hybu Cig Cymru, calling for it to be returned to levy payers. Mr. Gruffydd responded by emphasizing the need for Welsh Government representation in the organization and expressed confidence in its current trajectory under new leadership.
