Waitrose Becomes First UK Supermarket to Launch 'Free-Range' Cream Range
The retailer's move follows the successful launch of free-range milk two years ago, a commitment that has solidified Waitrose's reputation for leading the way in higher animal welfare and superior food production standards. Rachel Aldridge, dairy buyer for Waitrose, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “We’re proud to be the first supermarket to make it happen and hope others will follow suit.”
Waitrose's free-range dairy initiative aligns with the supermarket's pledge that all its dairy cattle will graze outside for at least 183 days a year. This commitment contrasts with the practice of keeping a fifth of the UK’s dairy herds housed year-round, emphasizing that outdoor access is crucial for the wellbeing of cows.
Jake Pickering, Waitrose's senior agriculture manager, highlighted the company's ongoing efforts to enhance animal welfare, noting, “By working with our dairy farmers and suppliers to introduce free-range cream, we can provide customers with the best products along with continued higher animal welfare standards.”
The new free-range cream products have been available since August 26 and can also be ordered online.
