Unións Agrarias raises alarm over the decline in Galician milk production and calls for fairer pricing in the sector.
Unións Agrarias Demands Price Hike to Counter Milk Production Decline
Unións Agrarias, an agricultural organization, has raised concerns about a significant decrease in milk production in Galicia, primarily driven by rising costs and diminishing profitability for farms. The organization warns that the situation may worsen if the prices paid to producers do not adjust to reflect the actual expenses involved in the activity.

They emphasize that Galician farmers, who are key suppliers of milk in Spain, are burdened with continuous increases in costs such as animal feed, energy, and veterinary services. This pressure has led to reduced production and risks the closure of small and medium-sized family farms. Additionally, they argue that the current dairy value chain does not distribute profits fairly, leaving producers vulnerable in negotiations with industry and major distributors.

Unións Agrarias also calls for greater involvement from public administrations to oversee abusive practices and ensure fair and stable contracts, along with specific support for the sector to sustain activity in rural areas and prevent depopulation. Without changes in pricing, the reduction in production could become structural, threatening Galicia's position as a leading milk producer and impacting food security across Spain.
