U.S. Dairy Markets Recover as Butter and NFDM Prices Surge

The U.S. dairy markets have experienced a notable recovery, largely due to increased prices for butter and nonfat dry milk (NFDM). These two commodities play a crucial role in the Federal Milk Marketing Order pricing formulas, influencing milk prices significantly. Earlier in the year, both products faced pricing pressures, but the market dynamics have shifted significantly.

Nonfat dry milk has shown the most significant price increase, with CME spot prices reaching a record high of $2.30 per pound this spring. This surge has outpaced markets in the European Union and New Zealand. A key factor in this rally has been tight supplies, as more farm milk is being directed towards protein-focused dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese, and high-protein shakes. This shift has reduced the milk available for NFDM production, leading to tighter inventories and supporting higher prices.

Production of NFDM in the U.S. has been on a downward trend over recent years, decreasing from 2 billion pounds in 2021 to a projected 1.66 billion pounds by 2025. In January, production dropped by 3.5% compared to the previous year, although there was a modest recovery in February and March. Additionally, product recalls have further limited available inventories during the spring price rally. By early March, CME spot prices for NFDM had already risen by 49 cents per pound, contributing to a bullish sentiment across dairy commodity markets.

The dairy sector's turnaround has been described as historically significant, driven by export momentum and evolving product demand. These changes in the market dynamics have been critical in reviving the dairy markets and enhancing profitability for producers.
