Mixed Trends in U.S. Dairy Exports: Lactose Sees Varied Performance, while Fluid Milk and Cream Sales Surge. In November 2023, U.S. lactose exports experienced a 7% decline (-2,848 MT), marking a fluctuating year for the product after an impressive 27% volume increase in the first quarter (+24,585 MT), said USDEC (U.S. Dairy Export Council).

From April through November, year-over-year U.S. lactose shipments fell by 1% (-2,736 MT). While purchases from New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and Japan decreased, growth to China (+24%, +24,138 MT), Mexico (+18%, +5,431 MT), India (+141%, +5,450 MT), and Brazil (+67%, +3,835 MT) partially offset the decline.
On the other hand, U.S. fluid milk and cream sales have shown a positive trend over the past three months, with year-over-year volume up by 12% (+3.6 million liters). November volume increased by 13% (+1.3 million liters). Sales to Canada (+29% September-November) and Mexico (+20%) played a crucial role in this rebound. Year-to-date U.S. fluid milk and cream exports were down 8% (-11,422 million liters), but the gap has been narrowing.
Mexico continued to be a standout market for U.S. suppliers in November 2023, leading all regions in volume gain with a rise of 4,434 MT in U.S. dairy exports (all major products, excluding fluid). India secured the second position with a notable increase of 2,116 MT, driven by WPC80+ and lactose. The Philippines (+1,406 MT) and Thailand (+1,033 MT) claimed the third and fourth positions, respectively.
