SunOpta Inc. has announced a significant expansion of its Dream Oatmilk Barista product, with plans to distribute to an additional 6,700 locations across North America beginning in January 2025. This move is part of a collaboration with a major coffee chain, which investment firm DA Davidson suggests could likely be Starbucks, as reported by TipRanks.

The announcement has positively impacted SunOpta’s stock, which saw a 4.4% rise, reaching CAD 8.62 ($6.32 USD) according to MarketWatch. To accommodate the expansion, SunOpta will leverage its existing manufacturing facilities, including an oat extraction site in Modesto, California, and a production facility in Midlothian, Texas.

Brian Kocher, CEO of SunOpta, emphasized the company’s commitment to quality and sustainability in plant-based beverages: “We’re incredibly proud to supply our customers with options like Dream Oatmilk Barista. Our goal is to offer delicious plant-based alternatives that enhance the coffee experience.”

The Dream Oatmilk Barista is tailored specifically for baristas, adding to SunOpta’s portfolio of coffee-focused plant-based beverages, which includes almond and coconut milk blends.

The company’s sustainability efforts include recyclable packaging and a strategically located manufacturing network designed to reduce carbon emissions, water usage, and packaging waste. “We are committed to a more sustainable future,” Kocher added.

This expansion is seen as a strategic milestone for SunOpta. According to DA Davidson, it underscores the effectiveness of SunOpta’s business development pipeline and is anticipated to bolster investor confidence for fiscal year 2025 as the company benefits from this increased distribution.

SunOpta’s recent financial performance supports this trajectory, with the company reporting a 21% revenue increase from continuing operations in the second quarter of 2024, driven by a 26.9% surge in volume. The expanded reach of its oatmilk offerings is expected to further support SunOpta’s growth in the plant-based beverage market.
