Taupo-based dairy processor Miraka has made another groundbreaking move in its sustainability journey by launching New Zealand’s first green hydrogen dual-fuel milk collection tanker.
This innovative step aims to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in milk transport, furthering the company’s commitment to a low-carbon future.
Miraka, already a global leader in sustainability through its use of renewable geothermal energy in dairy processing, continues to push the boundaries of environmental responsibility. With one of the world’s lowest manufacturing carbon footprints, the company’s dairy plant emits 92% less carbon dioxide than conventional coal-fired factories, a figure that sets a high standard in the industry.
At the launch event held at the Miraka dairy plant in Mokai, Agriculture Minister Todd McClay ceremonially started the new 700 horsepower Volvo green hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel tanker. The event highlights Miraka’s leadership in integrating sustainable technologies in its operations.
Bruce Scott, Chairman of Miraka, emphasized the significance of the new vehicle as a milestone aligned with the company's long-term vision for environmental stewardship. "This green hydrogen dual-fuel tanker represents our commitment to kaitiakitanga, or guardianship, as we support New Zealand's transition to a low-carbon economy," said Scott.
Karl Gradon, CEO of Miraka, expressed excitement about the project, noting that while hydrogen-powered vehicles are still in their early stages, they offer a promising solution for heavy freight. “Our new tanker will reduce milk collection CO2 emissions by approximately 35% per vehicle, benefiting both the environment and our community,” said Gradon. He also extended his gratitude to Central Transport Ltd and Halcyon Power, Miraka’s key partners in this initiative.
Miraka’s collaboration with Central Transport Ltd and Halcyon Power began a year ago when the companies established the Rural Hydrogen Hub. The hub, which aims to expand nationally, has become a model for integrating sustainable energy solutions in the agricultural sector.
Tūaropaki Trust, a major shareholder in Miraka, provides geothermal energy to the dairy plant and is instrumental in advancing the hydrogen project. Under a joint venture with Japan’s Obayashi Corporation, the Trust launched Halcyon Power, New Zealand's first commercial-scale green hydrogen plant. This plant supplies the hydrogen for Miraka’s tanker, marking a significant step in the country’s energy transition.
Brendon Cane, Managing Director of Central Transport Ltd, praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of innovation in reducing the carbon footprint in freight logistics. "This project demonstrates our dedication to exploring new technologies that align with the future of sustainable transport," Cane said.
The green hydrogen dual-fuel milk tanker will operate approximately 165,000 kilometers annually, with the capacity to haul 58 metric tonnes and require two hydrogen refills daily. This pioneering initiative positions Miraka as a leader in sustainable dairy logistics, reinforcing its role in shaping New Zealand’s low-emissions future.
