Attorney General’s Office Settles Environmental Case with Dairy Facility

St. Albans Creamery to pay civil penalties of $210,500 and implement corrective actions

Attorney General Charity Clark announced a settlement with St. Albans Creamery over environmental violations at its dairy processing facility. The facility repeatedly violated its pretreatment permit for wastewater discharges, including discharges of raw milk and cream, affecting local water resources. The settlement involves a penalty and corrective actions to prevent further violations.

Attorney General Clark emphasized the importance of protecting Vermont's environment, stating, "We all treasure our environment and natural resources in Vermont. Environmental permits are designed to protect our natural resources. I am very pleased that St. Albans Creamery has made a commitment to take the necessary actions to prevent further harmful discharges of raw milk wastes.”

The Creamery violated several environmental regulations, including excessive discharges impacting the wastewater facility and Stevens Brook. To address these violations, the facility will pay $210,500 and upgrade its pretreatment system.

The settlement was filed in Franklin Superior Court and is available for public review.
