Algerian ONIL Re-Enters Market with Milk Powder Tender for Mid-2024 Delivery

The Algerian purchasing agency, ONIL (Office National Interprofessionnel du Lait et de Produits Laitiers), has announced a fresh tender for Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) and Whole Milk Powder (WMP) set for delivery between June and September 2024.
Scheduled to close on March 27th, the tender invites bids from sellers worldwide. The move comes as no surprise to the market, following the issuance of new import permits in late February. Reports suggest a lackluster international demand for dairy during Q1 2024, heightening anticipation for the tender.
Market analysts predict that SMP will predominantly come from the EU, with sellers expected to offer competitive prices to boost export volumes. Meanwhile, New Zealand remains a primary source for WMP due to its competitive pricing compared to EU producers. Ongoing disruptions caused by Houthi rebel attacks in the Red Sea have led some freighters to reroute ships around Africa. However, with deliveries slated for June to September, exporters from New Zealand are not anticipated to face significant challenges.
