Aldi Cheese Recalled Over Possible Listeria Contamination Risk

Savencia Cheese USA has issued a voluntary recall of select soft-ripened cheeses sold at Aldi and other retailers due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria posing serious health risks to young children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
The recall, initiated last week, affects several cheese varieties, including Aldi’s Emporium Selection Brie and La Bonne Vie Camembert, according to a company notice posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.
The potential contamination was identified during routine testing at Savencia’s Lena manufacturing facility, where processing equipment may have been exposed to listeria. While no illnesses or confirmed cases of contamination have been reported, Savencia is working with the FDA as a precautionary measure to remove the affected products from shelves.
Recalled items include:
Aldi Emporium Selection Brie
La Bonne Vie Brie
La Bonne Vie Camembert
12- and 8-ounce Industrial Brie
Market Basket Brie
Supreme Oval
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria found in moist environments like water, soil, and decaying matter, as well as food production environments. The bacteria can thrive even in refrigerated conditions, posing risks in food processing, storage, and transport. Consumption of contaminated products can lead to listeriosis, a potentially fatal infection, especially dangerous for those with weakened immune systems, including children, the elderly, and pregnant women, who face increased risks of miscarriage or stillbirth.
The FDA advises that symptoms of listeriosis can range from mild, flu-like symptoms, such as fever, nausea, and muscle aches, to severe reactions like headache, confusion, and convulsions. In severe cases, symptoms can take days or even months to manifest.
Customers who have purchased the affected products are urged to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
