Vermont Dairy Processor Agri-Mark Fined $60,000 for Environmental Infractions
Agri-Mark, a major dairy processor located in Vermont, has been penalized with a $60,000 fine for environmental violations at its Middlebury plant. The company, which produces dairy and whey products for Cabot Creamery, was found to have violated 15 conditions of its pretreatment discharge permit since 2022, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.
The infractions include unpermitted discharges of high-strength waste into the municipal wastewater treatment system. Such actions pose a risk of contaminating surface waters, a significant environmental concern. In response to the violations, Agri-Mark has engaged a consultant to evaluate their facility and ensure compliance with permit requirements.
The Department of Environmental Conservation's findings highlight the importance of adhering to environmental regulations, particularly in industries with potential high impact on local ecosystems. Agri-Mark's commitment to rectifying the situation includes full compliance with the permit requirements following the consultant's evaluation.
