Dairy farm near Moscow placed under quarantine following leptospirosis outbreak

An outbreak of leptospirosis has been detected at a dairy farm operated by sole proprietor Eshmatov Ilyos Sobir Ugli in the village of Staraya Ruza in the Moscow region. The Ostorozhno Moskva channel reported this, citing an order issued by the regional Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The document provides for the imposition of quarantine on the farm.

The restrictions prohibit moving milk and dairy products obtained from sick animals off the premises. Access to the farm by outsiders has been restricted. Sick and clinically healthy animals must not be milked together, including with the same milking machines.

Additional measures have been imposed within a one-kilometre radius of the outbreak site. This zone covers the villages of Glukhovo and Staraya Ruza, as well as the settlement of Staraya Ruza. Fairs, exhibitions and auctions involving gatherings of animals susceptible to leptospirosis are prohibited within this zone.

The order does not specify a calendar date for the end of quarantine. The restrictions will remain in force until a separate decision is made to lift them. The source does not report the number of sick animals, the size of the farm's herd or any identified human cases.

Leptospirosis can be transmitted from animals to humans through contact with infected bodily fluids. Contaminated water and food can also be sources of infection. The disease can cause severe liver and kidney damage and can be fatal. Leptospirosis is not transmitted from person to person.
