USDETC Trains Students in Large-Herd Dairy Management

The U.S. Dairy Education and Training Consortium (USDETC) brings university students from across the United States into a six-week programme focused on the management of large dairy herds. The programme is based at Clovis Community College in New Mexico and extends into commercial dairy-producing areas of Texas.

Students receive classroom instruction in Clovis and make daily visits to agricultural businesses within a 50-mile radius. The sites include commercial dairies milking thousands of cows, specialised calf ranches, regional feed mills and commercial milk-processing plants.

During the fieldwork, participants examine different milking-parlour designs, cross-ventilated barns, open dry lots and automated milking systems. They also observe operating procedures on working dairy units, applying classroom material to commercial-scale production settings.

The curriculum covers ruminant nutrition, reproductive management, herd-health diagnostics, environmental compliance and dairy-business economics. University faculty and agribusiness professionals provide technical lessons and practical troubleshooting exercises. Students assess herd-health measures, ration consistency and biometric-monitoring data collected at commercial facilities.

Agribusiness sponsors take part through hosted luncheons and tours of facilities. The participating companies and organisations work in areas including nutrition, animal pharmaceuticals, genetics and herd-management technology. The programme also connects students with potential internships, dairy-operations positions and technical-consulting work.

USDETC presents the training as a response to the need for qualified managers at commercial dairies. Its instruction covers management issues associated with industry consolidation, environmental regulation and the use of new technologies, while also addressing capital allocation, animal welfare and productivity in large-herd systems.
