US Organic Food Sales Continue to Rise, Driven by Health-Conscious Consumers
US sales of organic food exceeded $65bn in 2024, supported by growth in sectors like bakery, fruit, dairy, and eggs. Sales reached $65.4bn, a 2.3% rise, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

Organic produce sales climbed 5.2% to $21.5bn, with berries and bananas contributing significantly. Produce accounted for over 30% of total organic sales. Conversely, packaged salad sales dropped by 4%. Bakery and fresh bread sales grew by 2.8%, led by artisanal products such as sourdough.

Dry breakfast goods sales surged by 8.1% as consumers sought healthier options. Added to this, younger consumers like Millennials and Gen Z are driving trends by balancing health consciousness with quality and indulgence. Sales of organic baby food and formula reached $1.6bn, growing by 3.8% but facing supply constraints. Organic dairy and egg sales rose by 7.7% to $8.5bn, and egg sales surged by 16.1% due to avian influenza impacts.

Certified organic product sales totaled $71.6bn, with non-food organic products contributing $6.2bn. The OTA forecasts a 5.1% annual growth rate until 2029, potentially increasing sales by $18bn. Tom Chapman, co-CEO of OTA, views the growth as a positive trajectory, while advocating for better consumer education and labeling to further boost organic adoption. The narrowing price gap between conventional and organic goods, especially groceries and dairy, is making organic choices more accessible.
