CRPT: Sales of Ayran and Kumis in Russia Have Doubled

Russians have significantly increased their consumption of national dairy drinks — ayran and kumis, according to data from the Center for Advanced Technologies Development (CRPT), the operator of the "Honest Sign" labeling system.

In the first nine months of 2025, sales of ayran increased by 2.5 million liters, reaching 27.8 million liters, while kumis sales doubled to 1.12 million liters.

"There is a noted increase in interest in national drinks: 2.5 million more liters of ayran were consumed, and kumis sales doubled," CRPT reported.

According to the center, milk remains the main dairy product in the diet of Russians. From January to September 2025, its consumption increased by 2.5%, totaling 3 billion liters.

In second place is kefir: Russians drank 556 million liters, which is 2.2% more than the previous year.

Yogurt ranked third in popularity with an increase of 4.8%, reaching 427.1 million liters.

The top ten most popular dairy products also include:

  • sour cream — 360 million kg;

  • cottage cheese and curd products — 359 million kg;

  • ice cream — 288 million kg;

  • hard cheeses — 231 million kg;

  • milkshakes and desserts — 173 million liters;

  • processed and curd cheeses — 142 million kg;

  • butter — 135 million kg.

Among fermented milk drinks, after kefir and yogurt, ryazhenka (111.3 million liters), ayran (27.8 million liters), and buttermilk (6.4 million liters) lead.

The segment of dairy desserts also shows steady growth. Ice cream remains the most popular product — 288 million kg (+2.42 million kg from last year). Milkshakes and desserts are in second place (173 million liters), and curd cheese bars round out the top three (41.3 million kg). However, their consumption decreased by 2.67 million kg compared to 2024.

The highest consumption volumes of dairy products are recorded in Moscow and the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar Krai, Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, as well as in the Sverdlovsk, Rostov, Chelyabinsk, and Nizhny Novgorod regions.

The total market volume for milk and dairy products in Russia from January to September 2025 is estimated at 1.67 trillion rubles, which confirms a steady growth in consumer interest in dairy products and national drinks.
