The Voluntary Dairy Dye Removal from School Programs

The International Dairy Foods Association has launched a voluntary initiative, known as 'The Healthy Dairy in Schools Commitment,' aiming to remove food dyes from milk, cheese, and yogurt products used in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. While participation is optional, all dairy suppliers to public schools involved in the NSLP have agreed to this transition.
Food dyes such as Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 are targeted for elimination from dairy products meant for K-12 schools starting in the 2026-2027 school year. This change focuses exclusively on dairy products.
This initiative could impact many schools in Mississippi, among other locations, participating in the NSLP, potentially affecting local school menus.
