Tetra Pak Introduces Advanced Bioreactor to Enhance Industrial Fermentation

Tetra Pak has unveiled its latest innovation in industrial bioreactor technology with the introduction of the Bioreactor RF. The new system aims to enhance fermentation processes by offering stable, scalable solutions with up to 12% lower operational costs. This launch follows Tetra Pak’s acquisition of Bioreactors.net in December 2025, expanding the company’s capabilities in industrial fermentation and new food production.

Key Features and Benefits

The Bioreactor RF is designed to maintain stable conditions and provide operators with valuable process insights. It is suitable for applications ranging from pilot validation to full-scale production, ensuring repeatable performance without increased operational complexity. Rafael Barros, director of the new food business stream at Tetra Pak, emphasized the importance of repeatable performance in industrial fermentation, stating, “This is designed to reduce operational risk and remove complexity, helping operators stay in control.”

The system is pre-assembled and factory-tested, which facilitates faster installation and commissioning, reducing disruptions to production planning. Its integrated platform design eliminates the need for separate support structures, thereby lowering installation costs and complexity. According to Tetra Pak, these features can result in investment cost savings of up to 8% compared to traditional industrial bioreactors.

Innovative Design and Technology

The core of the Bioreactor RF is a patented magnetic agitation system that eliminates the need for mechanical seals, a common source of contamination risk and process instability in conventional designs. Unlike traditional magnetic agitators, which often lose power as the vessel size increases, Tetra Pak’s system is engineered to maintain power and oxygen transfer across all sizes. This capability helps maintain stable process conditions and minimizes the risk of batch loss, typically valued at around €1,000 per cubic metre.

Available in sizes ranging from 10 to 50,000 litres, all units of the Bioreactor RF utilize the same design platform, control logic, and operating philosophy. This standardized approach, combined with predefined operating strategies and integrated data monitoring, enables operators to run processes more efficiently and with greater visibility.

The introduction of the Bioreactor RF highlights Tetra Pak’s commitment to advancing the capabilities of food and ingredient producers as they move from pilot testing to industrial-scale production, aiming to improve resource efficiency and diversify ingredient sourcing.
