Spanish experts urge a return to “grandparents’ diet” to fight childhood obesity
Spanish experts have pointed to a “paradox”: Spain is considered the home of the Mediterranean diet, yet children in the country are eating more and more ultra-processed products. The experts therefore advised returning to the “grandparents’” diet, based on fresh local food, both at home and in schools, EFE news agency reports.
The conclusion was voiced on October 21 in Madrid at the conference “Towards a new model of eating habits in childhood: the school environment”. It was organised by EFE together with the Spanish Association of Yogurt and Fresh Dairy Dessert Manufacturers (AEFY). Participants also spoke of the need to ensure children have equal access to healthy food.
The conference was attended by Rosa Casas, researcher at the cardiovascular risk, nutrition and ageing research group of IDIBAPS at Barcelona’s Hospital Clínic; Hermann Schwarz, secretary of the One Health Platform; and psychologist Rosi Nieves, director of Kitchen Academy.
