Spain’s UHT Milk Industry Seeks Profit Beyond Price Competition

Spanish households bought more than 2.75bn litres of UHT milk in the 12 months to June 2026, accounting for about 95.5% of liquid milk purchases for home consumption. With penetration already high, Tetra Pak says processors are focusing on efficiency, reduced losses and higher-value products rather than volume alone.
Spain’s UHT Milk Industry Seeks Profit Beyond Price Competition

Data from Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, cited by Tetra Pak, show that household purchases of UHT milk exceeded 2.75bn litres in the year ending June 2026. The format represented approximately 95.5% of liquid milk bought for consumption at home. At this scale, small production inefficiencies can create significant costs across a processing operation.

José Luis Velilla, marketing director of Tetra Pak Iberia, argues that competitiveness should be assessed across the entire production line rather than machine by machine. Extra product losses, unnecessary energy use, unplanned stoppages and extended cleaning periods can all affect the economics of a plant. An efficient machine may deliver limited benefits if another stage of the line remains a bottleneck.

Operating costs extend beyond equipment prices

Processors are paying greater attention to total cost of ownership, which includes the expense of operating equipment throughout its useful life. A system with a lower purchase price may require more energy or maintenance, or may be associated with greater product losses. In a high-volume category with tight margins, those costs can outweigh the initial difference in investment.

Tetra Pak is also presenting maintenance services based on the performance of the complete line. The approach is intended to identify problems earlier, increase equipment availability and reduce unproductive time, rather than relying only on repairs after a failure. For a plant processing large quantities of UHT milk, additional effective operating hours may postpone the need for new capacity. Improving output can therefore involve losing less of the milk already entering the plant, rather than simply processing more litres.

Environmental performance includes the whole chain

UHT milk retains a logistical advantage because sealed products can be stored, transported and sold without refrigeration. Refrigerated products require controlled temperatures from the factory to the retail outlet. The environmental assessment of UHT production nevertheless extends to energy and water use, packaging materials, product waste and final disposal.

Tetra Pak cites its Dairy Processing Impact Assessment, which was independently reviewed by Carbon Trust. Depending on the line configuration, the company says that upgrading certain processing equipment could reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by between 40% and 49%. The analysed scenarios showed average reductions of 47% in greenhouse-gas emissions, 45% in water use and 57% in product losses compared with lines identified by Tetra Pak as best-practice systems in 2019. Tetra Pak says the figures are not an average for the dairy industry and will vary according to location, plant design and the characteristics of each installation.

Packaging and product development add complexity

In UHT production, aseptic packaging is linked to processing, distribution and storage. It allows the product to remain at room temperature before opening, while also influencing line speeds and commercial formats. The industry is using materials from different sources, including plant-based polymers and certified recycled materials. Tetra Pak treats the processing system and the package as parts of the same industrial decision.

Higher-value products are another route for the category. Enriched milk, functional formulations and single-serve formats can introduce attributes beyond the basic litre of milk. Proteins, minerals, stabilisers, flavourings and sweeteners can alter the product’s behaviour during heat treatment and affect texture, taste, stability and shelf life. A high-protein product must remain stable for months, while a new format may require changes to filling-line performance. Formulation, thermal treatment and packaging therefore need to be developed together.
