Despite a recent fire ravaging Central Dairies' warehouse and temporarily halting production, the sale of the dairy giant to the newly established Newfoundland and Labrador Dairy Co-operative remains on track.
Sale of Central Dairies to newly forged dairy co-op continues
Following the blaze, which struck just a week ago, milk processing operations resumed this Tuesday, marking a significant step in the recovery process. Meanwhile, the fledgling dairy co-op presses forward with its plans to acquire the Mount Pearl processing facility from Agropur Dairy.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Dairy Co-operative, formed in November, comprises 19 farmers, including Crosbie Williams of Pondview Farms in the Goulds neighborhood of St. John's. Williams expressed pride in the co-op's mission to establish a locally owned and operated dairy supply chain.

Maintaining the iconic Central Dairies brand is a priority for the co-op, as it boasts a rich heritage and strong consumer loyalty, according to Williams. He emphasized the importance of preserving the brand's legacy amid the transition.

Speaking on the financial challenges faced by farmers, Williams highlighted the necessity of innovative solutions such as forming a co-operative to address rising costs.

"Cost savings are at the forefront of farmers' concerns every day. It's our reality, and we must remain financially vigilant to ensure our sustainability," Williams remarked.

As the sale progresses and operations resume at Central Dairies, the resilience of both the dairy industry and the local farming community shines through adversity.
