Raisio Group Invests in Oat Facility Expansion for Plant-Based Growth

Raisio Group, known for its brands Benecol and Elovena, has finalized a $1.7 million expansion at its Nokia Mill in Finland. This facility is crucial for producing gluten-free oats, catering to both its plant-based production and international clients. The expansion included the addition of a new laboratory building, part of a broader €19 million investment program initiated in 2018 to enhance oat and grain ingredient production.

The new infrastructure supports Raisio's strategy to capitalize on the growing demand for gluten-free oat products and healthy snacks globally. Noora Pöyhönen, chief business officer for Raisio's breakfast, snacking, and food solutions division, highlighted the significance of the Nokia Mill, noting its role in Raisio's international expansion efforts. The facility employs around 60 people and produces oat flakes, flours, groats, and bran for various markets.

In recent years, Raisio has expanded its Elovena brand, offering oat-based milks and non-dairy yogurts across European markets, most recently in Spain and the Netherlands. The strategic importance of the Nokia Mill has grown, with investments enhancing its capacity to produce gluten-free oats and oat fiber concentrates.

Simultaneously, Raisio has embarked on a government-supported sidestream valorization project. This initiative, backed by €1.8 million from Business Finland and €2.7 million from Raisio itself, aims to convert grain processing byproducts into functional fiber ingredients at the Raisionkaari industrial site.

Additional investments in Nokia Mill's infrastructure include a new packaging line introduced in 2021 and a production line for instant oatmeal products expected to be completed in 2024. Energy solutions at Nokia Mill were also updated with a new heating plant in 2021, utilizing oat husk to generate heat and steam, enhancing sustainability and cost-efficiency.
