Paraná’s Milk Prices Moved Differently for Farmers and Retailers

Data from the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), within Paraná’s Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply, put the average price received by milk producers at R$2.83 per litre in September. The figure was 1% above the previous month and 6.43% higher than in September 2025.

The producer price does not refer to milk collected during September. The September payment covered milk gathered by processors in August, creating a time lag between collection and the price recorded in the statistics.

This timing helps explain why movements at the farm gate and in shops may occur at different points. In Paraná’s retail market, long-life milk fell by R$0.11 per litre, from an average of R$5.44 in August to R$5.33 in September.

Mozzarella moved in the opposite direction during the month. Deral and Seab identify it as one of the dairy products most consumed in Paraná, but the source does not provide its average price or the size of the increase.

The price paid by consumers also reflects factors beyond the amount received by producers. These include the payment terms used by processors, inventory levels and the time products remain on shop shelves. As winter ended, Deral and Seab noted a seasonal pattern in which milk prices have historically tended to decline and settle at lower levels after the winter period. That movement is less favourable for producers, while it can create room for lower retail prices for dairy products.
