New Zealand Dairy Awards Open 2027 Entries With NZ$1m Prize Pool
The 2027 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards opened registrations nationwide on Monday. The competition covers 11 regions and offers a combined prize package valued at more than NZ$1 million, with awards linked to professional development, business benchmarking and routes towards farm ownership.
Regional assessment rounds will take place in early 2027. Regional winners will compete for national titles at the National Awards Dinner in Christchurch on May 15, 2027. The programme has three main categories: Farmer of the Year, Dairy Manager of the Year and Dairy Trainee of the Year.
The regional structure includes the newly established North Waikato and Hauraki region. Judges assess entrants on financial capability, pasture use, staff management, animal health and environmental compliance. Branches including West Coast and Top of the South are also developing additional management roles within their committees.
Entrants can compare business results with sector benchmarks using industry measures and tools such as DairyBase. These include production costs per kilogram of milk solids, labour efficiency and pasture harvesting rates. Previous winners have also identified rumination sensors and digital herd-recording systems as examples of technology used on farms.
Financial support is included in several awards. The ASB Alumni of the Year Award offers eligible previous entrants with at least 50% business equity access to up to NZ$1 million in business-term lending, fixed at a 1% interest rate for three years. The Fonterra and ASB First Farm Award includes NZ$20,000 in Farm Source credit, reduced-cost milk-cooling and refrigeration leases, and preferential fuel and insurance arrangements. Recipients can also receive fixed milk-price agreements covering up to 100,000kg of milk solids during their first two seasons.
The awards are backed by ASB, CowManager, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Honda, LIC and Power Farming, with Fonterra and DairyNZ among the wider industry partners. The Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award recognises environmental management, nutrient containment and animal-welfare practices. The programme is being promoted while seasonal farm-gate milk-price forecasts stand at NZ$9.50 to NZ$10.00 per kilogram of milk solids.
