The New Zealand government has pledged to support the expansion of Sri Lanka's dairy industry. This commitment follows a meeting between Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and New Zealand High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David Pine.

The discussions centered on enhancing Sri Lanka's dairy sector and also included talks on cultivating avocados, pineapples, and mangoes. Currently, avocados, which are in high demand internationally, are grown in Sri Lanka's central hills.

Despite efforts, 60% of Sri Lanka's milk requirements are still met through imports. To boost domestic milk production, the introduction of new technology, the importation of high-quality semen, and the application of advanced dairy farming techniques are necessary.

High Commissioner Pine stated that New Zealand is ready to provide all the technical support required for enhancing milk production in Sri Lanka. These measures will be implemented in close consultation with the New Zealand government.

Additionally, High Commissioner Pine agreed to explore opportunities for exporting Sri Lankan pineapples and mangoes to New Zealand.
