Nestlé Canada has initiated a recall of its Gerber brand oat, banana, and mango baby cereal due to potential contamination with Cronobacter spp., as announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The recalled product bears a best before date of May 30, 2025, and the universal product code (UPC) 0 65000 13361 5. Although there have been no reported cases of illness associated with this product, the CFIA advises consumers to avoid consuming, selling, serving, or distributing the affected cereal. Instead, it should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

This recall impacts several provinces, including Quebec, Ontario, and New Brunswick. The CFIA emphasizes that foods contaminated with Cronobacter spp. may not exhibit visible spoilage or unusual odors but can still pose serious health risks.

Cronobacter spp. can cause severe illness or even death in infants. In children under one year old, symptoms may include fever, poor feeding, excessive crying, very low energy, and seizures.

Consumers are urged to take immediate action to prevent potential health risks by adhering to the recall guidelines and monitoring any symptoms in young children that could indicate infection. For further information, consumers should contact the CFIA or Nestlé Canada.
