Milk Price Tracker: Stability in December 2024 Amid Irish Dairy Market Trends

The latest Milk Price Tracker, a joint initiative by Agriland and the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA), has been released, providing insights into milk prices among Ireland's major dairy cooperatives for December 2024. The co-ops within this tracker are ranked purely on their base milk prices.

The December 2024 report marks a positive conclusion to the year in terms of milk prices, which have seen a challenging start. Most co-ops reported base prices above 50 cents per liter (c/L), demonstrating a healthy market recovery.

The conversion factor used in calculating these prices is 1.03, equating 1L of milk to 1.03kg. Importantly, this report adheres to Agriland and ICMSA policies by not incorporating any support payments, bonuses, or additional payments in the base milk price computations.

Market Observations and Co-op Performances

Irish dairy markets appear stable for the onset of 2025, with factors within the dairy trade—supply, demand, and pricing trends—aligning favorably. The only co-op to alter its pricing in December 2024 was Tipperary, increasing its price by 1.00 c/L, elevating its standing from the bottom of the tracker to third from the bottom with a base price of 48.84c/L.

Leading the rankings, the west Cork cooperatives held their top positions: Lisavaird at 51.26c/L, Drinagh at 51.25c/L, and both Bandon and Barryroe at 51.08c/L each.

Meanwhile, Tirlán followed closely behind the west Cork giants with a solid base price of 50.58c/L, boosted by a generous seasonality bonus, underscoring expanding market confidence towards the year-end.

December Bonuses and Penalties

Beyond basic price tracking, highlights include substantial bonuses for various performance metrics. Tipperary offered a 3c/L winter bonus, and Tirlán extended a 5c/L seasonality reward. Other bonuses and penalties varied, focusing on sustainability metrics, quality indicators, and supply chain efficiencies.
