Milk Powder Prices Surge: Opportunity and Caution in Uruguay

Milk powder has risen over USD 1,800 since August and leads exports, with the global market showing resilience but with potential future changes.
The price of whole milk powder has continued its upward trend in the international market, recently reaching USD 4,374 per tonne as confirmed by Fonterra's latest event. This rise is nearing the peak price from March 1, 2022, when it reached USD 4,757. Since hitting a low of USD 2,548 in August 2023, prices have increased by USD 1,826.
Since the beginning of 2025, whole milk powder was priced at USD 3,804, and in mid-April, it was USD 4,171. Export volumes in 2025 have surged, with 48,412 tonnes shipped, representing a 7% increase over the same period in 2024, valued at USD 188.9 million, marking a 23% increase. Former president of the National Institute of Milk, Ing. Agr. Juan Daniel Vago Armand Ugon, noted that Uruguay should "take advantage of the price and climate to save," while cautioning that "the scenario may change next year" due to the unpredictable climatic conditions impacting supply and demand.
