Kerry Opens Coffee Extraction Facility in Pennsylvania to Meet Increasing Demand
Kerry, a global taste and nutrition company, has officially opened its new coffee extraction facility in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This new site marks Kerry's initial manufacturing presence in Pennsylvania and aims to bolster the company's capabilities in producing high-quality coffee ingredients. A ribbon-cutting ceremony held on September 30 was attended by various stakeholders, including customers, industry partners, and government representatives.
Announced in 2025, the facility is designed to enhance the natural taste and flavor profiles of coffee through advanced extraction and concentration technologies. Kerry aims for the site to cater to a diverse range of applications such as ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee, alcoholic beverages, ice cream, and savory sauces. The facility features both hot and cold brew extraction lines and has been constructed with the flexibility to scale up production in response to increasing demand.
According to John Cahalane, President and CEO of Kerry North America, the new facility will improve proximity to customers on the US East Coast while offering adaptability to evolving consumer preferences. It is also expected to streamline supply chain operations and lessen environmental impacts.
The facility's opening coincides with a surge in demand for premium and specialty coffee varieties in the US. Figures from the National Coffee Association indicate that 48% of American adults consumed specialty coffee on the day surveyed, a significant rise compared to those opting for traditional coffee.
Kerry's technologies will enable manufacturers and foodservice operators to produce coffee products that mimic the 'fresh-brewed' experience, while retaining long shelf life. The company highlights its roasting, extraction, concentration, and thermal processing techniques, which are essential in maintaining the 'true-to-bean' flavor and aroma.
The facility also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. Kerry reports that its high-Brix coffee concentrates can considerably reduce water transport needs, emphasizing shipping efficiency by enabling ambient temperature transportation. The Direct Concentrated Fresh bean solution claims a 61% lower carbon footprint, while conventional offerings show a 40% reduction compared to competitor products. Moreover, Kerry's products adhere to certification standards such as USDA Organic, Fairtrade, and Rainforest Alliance, aligning with the company's larger sustainability goals.
