The presentation “Camel and cow milk - export potential and national uniqueness” was presented at AqAltyn by Alexandra Grigolova, master cheesemaker from the Mangistau region, winner of the international cheese competition Mondial du fromage, member of the International Guild of Cheesemakers, founder of the goat farm “Zheti Lak”, reports The DairyNews .
The Kazakh dairy market should focus on promoting the benefits of camel milk - Alexandra Grigolova

“Mangistau region is the leader in the number of camels in Kazakhstan. There are many camels in the region, but not much milk. This is primarily due to the insufficient amount of feed and the lack of dairy camel breeds,” Alexandra Grigolova began her speech.

“According to statistics, which may deceive us, one of the leaders in the production of this type of milk in Kazakhstan is the Atyrau region. Perhaps the fact is that production volumes can be calculated from the volumes of subsidies allocated to farmers,” the cheese maker continued.

According to the expert, camel milk is gaining popularity in the country, but in terms of its industrial production, demand may exceed technical capabilities.

Today, the Mangystau region is breeding its own line of dairy camels. The primary difficulty in this matter is the farmers themselves, who have low competence, says Alexandra Grigolova. Processors have to work with the consciousness of farmers and buy means for processing and sanitizing animals themselves.

As the expert said, a camel can produce 4.5 liters of milk per day, the average duration of lactation is about 500 days. However, without a baby camel, the mother may stop lactating.

Features of camel milk compared to cow milk: camel milk coagulates very poorly, but it has greater nutritional value, including calcium, vitamin C. It contains a low amount of lactose, which itself can be processed. 35 strains, including yeast, are found in Kazakh camel milk.

Today, all processing of camel milk in Kazakhstan is focused on sublimation and drying, the speaker said. Freeze-dried camel milk is supplied to the markets of America, China and other countries. A camel milk cheese produced in Kazakhstan won a silver medal at the 2023 Mondiale du Fromage international cheese and dairy competition. Also now promising is the production of baby food based on camel milk.

Analysts predict that the global camel milk market will reach $2.02 billion by 2032, with sales of camel milk products expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.1%.

Alexandra Grigolova suggests that newcomers and market players focus on promoting the benefits of camel milk, competent marketing and reducing the cost of the final product.

Previously, The DairyNews published an interview with Alexandra Grigolova “Camel milk can become a “trick” of Kazakhstan and bring the country to the international dairy market with exclusive products!”
