Indonesia Plans to Import 200,000 Dairy Cattle by 2025 to Boost Milk Production

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono announced on Tuesday that the Indonesian Government is set to import 200,000 dairy cattle by the end of 2025. This move is designed to fulfill the nation's milk needs as part of the free nutritious meal program (MBG) menu.

With the completion of the relevant import regulations, procurement is now possible from countries including Australia. "The regulation has just been completed. We can import from several other countries besides Australia. We hope that in 2025, some 200 thousand dairy cattle will be imported into Indonesia," Sudaryono stated at the Presidential Palace.

In addition to livestock importation, the government is hastening the provision of land for farmers to accommodate these dairy herds. This initiative signifies a major government investment intended to establish a fresh milk processing factory within the country.

Sudaryono elaborated, "This initiative is part of our investment strategy. We build the milk factory here with imported cows." Additionally, 160 foreign and domestic companies have committed to participating in this cattle procurement venture.

Agung Suganda, Director General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, reported the recent arrival of 50 pregnant Frisian Holstein dairy cattle from Australia. These cattle are expected to contribute significantly to the MBG program championed by President Prabowo Subianto by supplying milk for the program.

This development is in alignment with the ministry's blueprint plan that seeks to heighten investor involvement to elevate the dairy cow population across Indonesia. It aligns with the government's objective of increasing the country's cattle population by one million within five years.

The introduction of these pregnant dairy cows underscores the private sector's commitment to accelerate investments in Indonesia. Initiated on January 6, the MBG program targets 26 provinces with the dual aim to reduce stunting rates and poverty while driving the community economy, aligning with Indonesia's broader Golden Indonesia 2045 strategy.
