Indonesia plans to import 1 million dairy cows between 2025 and 2028 to boost milk production in support of President Prabowo Subianto’s new free meals program, the agriculture ministry announced at a parliamentary hearing.
The free meals initiative, which aims to benefit 83 million Indonesians, was a central promise in Prabowo's election campaign. To meet the anticipated demand, the government projects milk consumption will reach 8.5 million tonnes by 2029, significantly higher than the current domestic output of approximately 1 million tonnes.
This large-scale import plan reflects the administration’s commitment to scaling up domestic milk production to fulfill the nutritional needs of millions under the program.
