In 2023, the volume of imports to China amounted to 17.18 million tons in terms of raw milk
According to the speaker, in 2023, China imported milk powder in the amount of 770 thousand tons, or 15.8% of international trade in milk powder; 430 thousand tons of whole milk powder (19.6%), 660 thousand tons of whey powder (40%).
The increase in imports for the period from 2008 to 2023 amounted to 14.09 million tons, which is 57% higher than the increase in domestic production over the same period. This is due to the growing demand for dairy products among Chinese consumers, especially in cities.
According to Du Ming, dairy imports to China account for 20% of all dairy products imported in the world. At the same time, China imports about 8% of dairy products from New Zealand.
Overall, 95% of New Zealand's dairy products are exported to the global market. 70% of the milk powder supplied to China comes from New Zealand. These countries have a free trade agreement between them, and some types of New Zealand dairy exports to China are not subject to duties, the expert noted.
Other major suppliers of dairy products are also Australia and the European Union.
"Exports of dairy products from China are very small, mainly to Hong Kong. The main export products are raw milk, powdered milk, baby food. In the future, China will not be able to export milk, because the country's production itself is unstable," Du Ming suggested.
According to him, Chinese dairy brands do not yet have sufficient international recognition and reputation, which limits their ability to compete with world leaders.
