How many people does a NZ dairy farm feed? Answer= 0,18 million. This question was discussed among Fonterra farmers last week in Auckland. Based on the IFCN Dairy Report 2023 it was easy to get the right number.
On average a New Zealand dairy farm is feeding approximately 184,000 or 0,184 million people with their annual dairy needs.
In this calculation, I assumed a world average dairy demand per capita in 2022 ( in milk equivalents 4% fat, 3,3% protein).
Thanks to the all Fonterra people and farmers. It has been a great experience and learning to have a face-to-face interaction in Auckland.
Moreover, it has been a great pleasure to share the Global Dairy Outlook 2050 of the IFCN Dairy Research Network with the Farmers Council members. A big thanks to you Kylie Leonard to make this happen.
My key observation was that similar to many countries, also in New Zealand, dairy farmers face challenges regarding the IMAGE OF DAIRY in
a) consumers challenge dairy as a product to consume
b) in local communities farmers face the challenges towards dairy farming
c) with the current image of dairy the sector might lose talent/ the next generation
The key question arises for me: Besides all that the dairy sector is doing already how can this be done BETTER to win the future for a), b) and c).
