Fonterra Lowers Milk Price Payout Due to Declining Global Demand

Fonterra, a major dairy cooperative, has announced a reduction in its milk price payout. This decision comes amidst a backdrop of declining global dairy commodity values, as observed in recent Global Dairy Trade (GDT) trading events. According to Fonterra Chief Executive Richard Allen, prices at the GDT have decreased by 11% across key reference products since late May. These products directly influence the cooperative's farmgate milk pricing model.

Recent GDT auctions have highlighted the macroeconomic pressures on global dairy markets. The aggregate price index at the most recent auction fell by 4.9%, affecting multi-product averages. Whole milk powder (WMP), a crucial product for determining New Zealand suppliers' farmgate payouts, experienced a 4.4% price decline. This decline prompted Fonterra to adjust its structural forecasts to better align with current market conditions.

Despite this early-season price correction, Fonterra is expecting a strong start to milk collection on New Zealand farms. However, the cooperative remains vigilant regarding potential weather disruptions. Specifically, the possible emergence of an El Niño climate pattern could impact global raw milk supply as the season progresses. Allen noted that it is still early in the production calendar, with most of the new season's sales contracts yet to be finalized.
