Farmers in Moldova staged a protest demanding government support

“Farmers from 20 districts are heading to Chisinau in accordance with the plan. Today, about 200 units of agricultural machinery will be collected on the outskirts of the capital. Tomorrow it will be moved in an organized manner to the Great National Assembly Square, where a protest rally will take place,” said Alexandru Slusari. Farmers are demanding that the government introduce a moratorium on penalties for debt against grain producers, as well as increase financial assistance to the sector affected by last year's drought, as well as falling grain prices.
This summer, farmers on tractors blocked traffic in the center of Chisinau, and then drove the equipment to the parliament and the presidential administration. In addition to the announced demands, they insisted on restrictions on the transit of grain from Ukraine, which, according to them, squeezes local products out of the market. In this situation, the Moldovan government promised to provide additional assistance to the agricultural sector. Then the farmers removed the equipment from Chisinau, promising to return after completing the harvesting work.
