The traditional fermented milk drink kefir, with roots in the 19th-century Caucasus, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity both within Russia and internationally. From 2017 to 2022, production of kefir, ryazhenka, and prostokvasha in Russia consistently exceeded 1.1 million tons annually. In 2023, production increased by a further 4%, reaching approximately 1.2 million tons, reports Dairynews.today, citing data from Agroexport.

Kefir exports are also showing positive dynamics. In 2024:

⦁ Export volume reached 2,300 tons,

⦁ This represents a 15% increase compared to 2023.


The main export destinations for Russian kefir in 2024 were:

⦁ Kazakhstan: 53% of total exports

⦁ Abkhazia: 38%

⦁ South Ossetia: 7%

The report also notes that kefir is gaining a new wave of popularity among consumers in the US, particularly among young people. On TikTok and Instagram, tens of thousands of videos tout kefir as a natural superfood.
