Danone remains steadfast in its pursuit of sustainable and profitable growth, fully aligned with its "Renew Danone" strategy launched in 2022.
This strategic initiative focuses on creating sustainable value while addressing the business's previous underperformance. According to Pablo Perversi, President of Danone Europe, the company has undergone significant transformation over the past two years. "Danone today is very different from two years ago," Perversi shared with ESM. "We now have the right fundamentals to become a truly science-based, consumer-centric company with a strong, health-focused mission."
In a forthcoming interview featured in the September/October edition of ESM, Perversi and Ayla Ziz, Danone's Senior Vice President of Sales, Customer & Commercial Europe, discuss the company's deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and innovation. This commitment dates back more than 50 years to the 'dual project' pledge introduced by former CEO Antoine Riboud, which laid the foundation for Danone's current approach.
This dedication has culminated in the Danone Impact Journey, an initiative launched in 2023 that is structured around three core pillars: Health, Nature, and People & Communities. These pillars guide Danone's efforts to provide science-based nutritional products, promote sustainable food production, improve access to nutrition, enhance employee well-being, and engage with communities. As Ziz articulates, the goal is to ensure that "economic and social responsibility go hand in hand."
A key component of Danone's sustainability efforts is its ambitious Climate Transition Plan, which aims for net zero emissions by 2050. Perversi emphasizes the importance of collaboration across the value chain to ensure that the costs of this transition are shared fairly among all stakeholders. "One of Danone's efforts to ensure that the cost of transition is borne equitably by all stakeholders of the food supply chain consists of enhancing collaboration and partnerships on impactful projects across our value chain, connecting suppliers, farmers, and retailers to deliver better value to consumers," he explains.
Danone’s approach to sustainability is encapsulated in the mantra, 'Sustainability without performance has no impact. Performance without sustainability has no future.' This philosophy underscores the company’s commitment to intertwining health, sustainability, and business success for long-term growth. Ziz further highlights that ensuring all aspects of the supply chain are interconnected and work in harmony is crucial. "Making agriculture more resilient to the climate crisis contributes to securing continued high-quality milk supply for our products, and to producing products that are in line with consumers’ expectations," she adds.
