Dairy Producers in Córdoba Face Challenges with Overproduction

The recent situation in Serrano, where approximately 40 dairy farms in the southern region of Córdoba were informed by Punta del Agua that it would cease accepting milk from July 31, highlights a growing issue in the dairy industry. These farms now need to find alternative buyers for their milk.

The problem is not isolated to this region. Across various dairy basins, milk production is on the rise, yet the necessary industrial investments to expand processing and reception capacity are lagging behind. This gap could lead to similar situations in other areas if not addressed.

Complicating matters further are the exits of major companies such as SanCor and Verónica, which previously had the capacity to absorb around 2.5 million liters of milk daily. Without these entities, the pressure on the remaining processing facilities has increased significantly.

Logistical costs are also becoming a critical factor. Dairy factories are now scrutinizing every route and additional expense before agreeing to process more milk. This scrutiny is particularly important as it impacts their overall financial balance.

The case of Serrano is seen as a potential early indicator of broader challenges facing the dairy industry as it grapples with the surge in milk production.
