Dairy Cows Visit the University of Kentucky

Three dairy cows—Dianthus, Daffodil and Avatar—came to the University of Kentucky on Thursday from Harvest Home Dairy in Oldham County. Their visit brought the animals onto the university campus and gave students an opportunity to meet them.

The university said the visit was connected to food prepared with local ingredients. Students who stopped to see the cows could also take a snack from a parfait bar organised by UK Hospitality.

Devon Hurley of UK Hospitality said the parfait bar used ingredients sourced from farms in Kentucky. The event therefore presented both the visiting dairy operation and food served through the university’s dining activities.

Angela Klingenfus of Harvest Home Dairy described the products made by the farm’s processing plant. These include cheese, yoghurt, yoghurt popsicles and caramelised milk.

Klingenfus said the dairy sells yoghurt to the University of Kentucky for use in its cafeterias. The arrangement links the farm’s processing operation with food supplied on the university campus.

Hurley said the university was committed to obtaining supplies from farm partners in Kentucky. She also said that the institution’s connection to the state was being reflected in its dining programme.
