Colombians Embrace Yogurts, Cheeses, and Butters as New Forms of Milk Consumption
In Colombia, the consumption of fluid milk is steadily declining, while other dairy products like yogurts, cheeses, and butters are gaining prominence. According to a study by Asoleche, these changes open strategic opportunities to reconnect consumers with this vital food. Yogurts, cheeses, butters, and even dairy drinks are beginning to replace traditional fluid milk in households, as highlighted by a national study involving the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Asoleche.

Conducted by Compas Raddar, the survey unveiled significant shifts in the consumption habits of milk and dairy products in Colombia. While fluid milk consumption continues to fall, derivatives are becoming more common in Colombian homes. The study revealed that Colombia's per capita fluid milk consumption decreased from 142 liters annually in 2016 to about 132 liters in 2023, a trend corroborated by Asoleche's study. "Consumers haven't stopped consuming dairy, but they are changing how they incorporate it into their diets," noted the Ministry of Agriculture's representative. This presents opportunities for diversifying the offerings: artisanal cheeses, functional yogurts, fortified beverages, and new presentations that adapt to modern lifestyles.

The multisectoral approach involving various ministries and the private sector aims to address barriers such as health myths, misinformation about product quality, and pricing issues, ultimately strengthening consumer trust and reinforcing the essential role of dairy in nutrition. The study highlights consumer profiles comfortable with other dairy derivatives, indicating opportunities for the industry through educational campaigns and market strategies based on evidence.
