The renowned dairy cooperative Calcar has announced its decision to shut down operations at its industrial plant located in Tarariras, Colonia department, Uruguay. The closure is expected to take place in the coming days and will impact over 100 employees currently working at the facility.

The decision comes amid prolonged financial struggles faced by the company, which include significant debts to the financial system, public organizations, and milk producers.

A critical financial tipping point was reached on March 28, 2025, when numerous dairy producers decided to reroute more than 60% of the daily milk supply processed by Calcar to other dairy industries, citing overdue payments as the primary reason.

Efforts by the Fondo de Reconversión de la Industria Láctea (FRIL) to provide financial support to Calcar, amounting to $2.5 million for investments, were insufficient to remedy the financial condition of the cooperative, resulting in the redundancy of 90 workers at the Carmelo plant and eventual closure in April 2024.

The irreversible decision to finalize the closing of Calcar's operations was communicated to national authorities on the evening of April 1, 2025. The announcement heralds the end of a company that has been a critical part of the regional dairy sector for years.
