Brazilian Dairy Sector Introduces New Financial Indicators for Stability

The Brazilian Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) has launched new financial indicators for UHT milk, mozzarella cheese, and industrial powdered milk. These indicators are designed to serve as official settlement indices for over-the-counter contracts developed by StoneX, a financial services firm. The introduction of these indicators marks a significant step towards greater financial and commercial sophistication in Brazil's dairy sector.

The indicators provide pricing references for UHT Milk in the Southeast region, Mozzarella Cheese in the Southeast, and Industrial Powdered Milk in São Paulo, with prices listed in R$/liter and R$/kg, respectively. According to Cepea, these references aim to create a more predictable environment for dairy producers, industries, and retailers by offering protection against price fluctuations.

Dairy Rally Georgia

This development comes amid structural changes in the Brazilian dairy industry, which has seen increased productivity, technological advancements, and heightened competition in recent decades. Despite these changes, the sector has historically been characterized by significant volatility and uncertainty.

Natália Grigol, a researcher at Cepea, noted that the new indicators are an attempt to provide more consistent references for contracts and hedge strategies within the dairy chain. The initiative is expected to impact various stakeholders, including producers, industries, and retail agents who are exposed to price variations.

StoneX manager Marianne Tufani emphasized the role of hedging in converting uncertainty into predictability, supporting different players in the chain with strategies tailored to their exposure profiles. However, the detailed methodology, initial historical series, and full update frequency of these new indicators have not been disclosed.
