Belgian Butter Firm Plaquette Aims for Global Expansion with Innovative Products
Plaquette, a Belgian butter company, has been making waves in the dairy industry with its unique 'candy' butters. These butters, available in both sweet and savory flavors, are packaged in bite-sized portions, resembling candies. This innovation has earned Plaquette a spot as a finalist in the Gulfood 2026 Innovation Awards, where it won for its innovative packaging and sustainability efforts.
The company offers a wide range of flavors, including seaweed, chimichurri, and truffle, with truffle butter being particularly popular due to its premium ingredients such as real truffles and truffle oil. Plaquette's candy butters are designed to minimize waste, allowing consumers to enjoy a variety of flavors without leftovers.
In addition to their candy butters, Plaquette also gained attention for its Emirate Flag butter, which combines four flavors—chilli pepper, jalapenos, salted, and truffle—into the shape of the United Arab Emirates flag. This product was also recognized at the Gulfood Innovation Awards.
Plaquette targets premium B2B and B2C markets, with a presence in Europe and Asia. The company has observed growing demand for customization in butter products, receiving special requests to personalize orders, such as specifying the origin of the milk or the source of seaweed and truffle ingredients.
Founder Lionel Plaquette, who has a background in farming, believes this experience provides an advantage in sourcing high-quality milk and ingredients for custom orders. Some of these custom requests have become permanent offerings, such as the Chimichurri butter for Brazilian consumers and the popular Shallot and Tarragon butter.
Plaquette's commitment to sustainability is evident in its employment practices, as each portion of butter is hand-packed by workers, including those with disabilities. The company aims to make a positive social impact while expanding its global reach in the premium dairy market.
