Argentine Dairy Sector Emphasizes Quality Over Quantity

Pablo Riva, a representative of the Argentine Rural Confederations (CRA), has proposed a shift in the dairy industry's focus from merely pricing milk per liter to recognizing the quality differences in milk. He emphasized the importance of defining and paying for the necessary solids in the industry, along with transparent bonuses for sanitary quality, composition, volume, and good production practices.

Riva pointed out that the macroeconomic stability in Argentina demands more efficient management of dairy farms, leading to fewer but larger production facilities. Professionalizing the industry, according to Riva, does not necessarily mean hiring more university professionals but using information and technology to enhance every process. He stated, "Everything that can be measured can be improved."

In a family-run establishment in Esperanza, Santa Fe, around 600 cows are milked daily, producing approximately 20,000 liters. The farm utilizes monitoring collars, reproductive management systems, sanitary indicators, and joint input purchases to improve efficiency and cut costs.

Riva also advocated for a new relationship model between producers and the industry, suggesting long-term planning rather than negotiating solely on price differences per liter. He described the industry as a client and producers as the primary suppliers, stressing the need for joint planning on product needs, demand, and production methods.

He concluded with a statement reflecting the challenges in the Argentine dairy sector: "All milk is white, but not all milk is the same. If we make an effort to produce a higher quality raw material, that value must also be recognized."
