Yogi Government Pursues Anti-Adulteration Enforcement and Dairy Expansion

Food-safety enforcement

Data from the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department cover almost a decade of regulatory activity in Uttar Pradesh. During that period, officials carried out more than 14.49 lakh inspections and over 2.10 lakh raids aimed at identifying breaches in food regulations.

The operations found more than 1.37 lakh food samples that did not comply with the rules. Authorities subsequently filed over 1.29 lakh cases in court. The enforcement record also includes several prison convictions and the collection of penalties exceeding ₹368 crore.

Action against dairy adulteration

Recent campaigns focused on toxic contaminants, chemically produced milk and imitation dairy products. Raids in major urban and trading centres, including Ghaziabad, Mathura, Saharanpur, Meerut and Varanasi, resulted in the seizure and destruction of thousands of quintals of adulterated khoya, counterfeit paneer and synthetic milk at the sites of enforcement.

The state has also prohibited the manufacture and sale of products made with vegetable oil that imitate pure paneer, khoya and ghee. The ban forms part of the measures directed at products presented as dairy items but made with non-dairy ingredients.

Milk production

Alongside enforcement, Uttar Pradesh has pursued programmes aimed at strengthening domestic milk production. The Nand Baba Dugdh Mission is intended to revive and reinforce primary dairy cooperative societies at village level, according to the state’s agricultural programme.

Uttar Pradesh recorded more than 388 lakh metric tonnes, or 38.8m tonnes, of milk in FY2024–25. The figure represented about 16% of India’s total milk production and placed the state first among the country’s milk-producing states.
