President-elect Donald Trump has appointed former New York congressman Lee Zeldin as his pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), suggesting a shift toward deregulation in environmental policy that may impact the agricultural sector. Background: Zeldin, a Republican who represented New York's 1st district from 2015 to 2023, has a limited background in environmental policy and did not serve on congressional committees overseeing environmental issues. He holds a lifetime score of just 14% from the League of Conservation Voters, signaling a track record often opposed to environmental regulation.

Trump’s Vision for Deregulation: Trump emphasized Zeldin’s role in ensuring "fair and swift deregulatory decisions" to enhance American business potential while maintaining "the highest environmental standards.” Key priorities for Zeldin’s tenure could include restoring U.S. energy dominance and supporting the auto industry, with a focus on rolling back regulations from the Biden administration, including pollution controls for power plants and vehicle emissions standards.

Agriculture and Biofuels: Zeldin’s stance on agriculture aligns with Trump’s trade and land policies, particularly around issues like limiting foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land and supporting American farmers. During a September campaign roundtable, Zeldin praised Trump’s policies for strengthening U.S. supply chain resilience through trade agreements like the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Zeldin has also shown concern over the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which mandates biofuel blending levels in gasoline. In 2015, he and other lawmakers expressed worries about the EPA’s proposed blending volumes, fearing the "blend wall" would increase fuel prices. The EPA later set lower blending obligations than initially proposed, attempting to balance industry demands and technical limits in the fuel market.

Potential Moves: Discussions are ongoing about relocating EPA headquarters outside of Washington, D.C., signaling possible structural changes within the agency under Zeldin’s leadership.

Environmental advocates have voiced concerns, viewing Zeldin’s nomination as a potential step backward on climate and environmental protection, citing his opposition to climate legislation and support for fossil fuel development.
