Traditional Thanksgiving dinner in the US fell by 4.5% over the year

Last year, amid record inflation, the price of dinner jumped 20%, making it the most expensive in the history of AFBF's annual surveys, since 1986.

Classic Family Dinner Kit for 10 people includes 11 items: turkey, turkey stuffing, pumpkin pie dough and stuffing, buttered buns, whipped cream, peas, milk, sweet potatoes, mixed vegetables (carrots and celery), and fresh cranberries . Per person, the cost of such a set will be just over $6.

Over the past year, almost all the ingredients on the list have fallen in price.

Turkey, the main dish of a traditional feast, fell in price by 5.6% - now a carcass weighing 16 pounds (7.3 kg) can be bought on average for $27.35.

At the same time, the AFBF message emphasizes that volunteers checked prices in stores across the country from November 1 to November 6, that is, before the start of the pre-holiday discount period, and now turkey may be significantly cheaper.

"Those who have not yet purchased a turkey may find additional discounts during the holidays," the press release states.

Whipped cream and cranberries fell in price the most – by 22.8% and 18.3%, respectively. At the same time, pumpkin pie filling and buns increased in price by 3.8% and 3%, respectively.

Despite still high inflation and supply chain disruptions, the United States ranks first among 104 countries in the world for food affordability. Americans spend just 6.7% of their disposable income on food. Singapore, which ranks second, has a share of 8.4%, AFBF notes. At the same time, residents of five countries around the world spend more than 50% of their income on food, and in Nigeria this figure reaches 59%.
