Sweden Reports Two Outbreaks of Bluetongue Virus Among Cattle Farms
The disease, which poses a serious threat to domestic ruminants such as sheep, cattle, and goats, has been spreading across northern Europe, with the BTV3 variant being a significant concern since late last year.

The first outbreak in Sweden was identified on a dairy farm in Uddevalla, home to 59 animals. The affected cow exhibited symptoms including reduced milk production and intermittent lethargy. The second outbreak occurred in Laholm, at a beef cattle farm with 123 animals. In this case, the affected cow showed signs of fever, nasal mucosa erosions, and diarrhea.

The bluetongue virus has prompted vaccination efforts in several affected European countries, including France.

This virus, which can be deadly for livestock, is being closely monitored to prevent further spread. In addition to the Swedish cases, the WOAH has also reported an outbreak of the disease on a cattle farm in western Austria.

As countries continue to grapple with this outbreak, the virus poses a significant threat to livestock industries, and timely containment measures are critical to minimizing its impact.
